Suspect arrested for illegal firearm

One suspect was arrested for being in possession of an illegal firearm after he tried to run away from police.

MAYBERRY PARK – One suspect was arrested after police were warned to be on the lookout for a suspicious looking black VW Golf carrying the driver, his girlfriend and two toddlers.

The car was followed by EMPD Germiston Crime Prevention Task Team. A 9mm pistol with its serial numbers filed off was retrieved from a napkin bag. The arrest took place on Tuesday, December 3 around 17:00 in Mayberry Park.

When the vehicle was stopped and the driver asked about the firearm, he denied owning any firearm. On searching the vehicle, the metro police found nine rounds hidden under the back seat of the Golf and the unlicensed pistol was found in the napkin bag. At that moment, the suspect fled the scene, but metro police officers managed to arrest him a few minutes later.

The 24-year-old suspect was charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition at Brackendowns police station. He was expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s court on Wednesday, December 4.
