EMPD Speed Unit arrest speedsters

Speeding motorists arrested over the weekend.

EMPD’s High-Speed Unit targeted some main roads on March 2 and March 3 between 8am and 11am on both days. Areas targeted were the N12 eastbound by Atlas turnoff in the Boksburg area, N3 southbound by the Rand Airport exit in the Germiston area, on Van Wyk Louw between Brink and Mikro roads in Boksburg as well as Heidelberg and Dekema in Alrode. A 26-year-old male driver in a red VW Golf GTI was arrested on Saturday at 9.20am on the N12 eastbound. He was doing 165km/h and claimed to have been rushing to a hospital.

Subsequently, between 9.50 am and 1pm along Van Wyk Louw between Brink and Mikro roads in Boksburg, three male drivers, aged between 30 and 33, in two sedans and one SUV. were apprehended.

They were caught doing speeds of 118, 106 and 100km/h in a 60km zone. The trio claimed that they were either late for work or rushing home.

On March 3, the EMPD conducted another operation and netted five speedsters at the intersection in Heidelberg and Dekema roads in Alrode which is a 70km zone. The speedsters were males all in sedans aged between 26 and 49 who registered red speeds of 133,134,120, 112 and 106km/h respectively. Again their reasons for speeding were that they were rushing home or to work.

On the N3 southbound near the Rand Airport turnoff a 21-year-old male driver in a white Renault Clio was nabbed doing 170km/h and claimed that he was late for church service.

The arrested drivers were charged with reckless and negligent driving and are expected to appear in the respective magistrate’s courts on Monday.
