Baby Eden kidnapping case postponed due to language barrier

There is a language barrier between the accused and their lawyers.

THE five alleged kidnappers of Eden Laird, who was kidnapped on May 2, 2018, reappeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on March 6.

Their last appearance was on February 18, and the case was postponed due to extra charges being added and to allow for the suspects to consult with their lawyers.

This case, however, was again postponed for different reasons, one being a language barrier between the suspects and lawyers. The suspects are asking for an Ndebele interpreter.

Another reason is that the lawyers struggle to secure appointments with their clients, due to many reasons.

The case has been postponed to April 1 and the suspects will remain in custody

Cleopatra Manjankosi took Eden, tied him up on her back, for a walk from the family’s house in Brackendowns on May 2, at about 8.45am and did not return.

The suspects demanded a R6-million ransom for the baby’s safe return.

Police set up a sting operation which led to Eden being found in Windmill Park near Boksburg during that weekend and he was safely home in his parents’ arms on May 5.

The suspects’ first court appearance was on May 7, 2018.

Manjankosi worked for the Laird family for two years.
