ALBERTON High School’s welfare committee led by Dylan Jacobs, a Grade 12 learner, donated a wheelchair to Amcare on April 26.
Through this initiative the school has for the past four years collected bottle tops which it recycles. The wheelchairs are donated by Inter-Waste. The company supplies the wheelchairs to the committee in exchange of bottle tops. The committee in turn identifies beneficiaries.
This has enabled Dylan to donate at least 15 wheelchairs to the less fortunate in the community. He is determined to reach the target of twenty wheelchairs for charities by 2020.
While saving the environment, Dylan’s welfare committee donated the wheelchair to Denise Ann of the CHOC Foundation on April 16.
Dylan Jacobs, who is the deputy president of the committee, said his involvement in the initiative made him feel like he has won a lottery.
“I started with this gesture in Grade Eight and has been involved in giving back to the community ever since. My first ever wheelchair I donated was presented to Frances Vorwerg School for the Disabled while I was in Grade Eight. I was inspired to being involved in this by my then Grade Eight teacher who highlighted the importance of making a difference in someone’s life,” said Dylan.
Kim Kroukamp, a teacher at the school, commented: “Alberton High School would like to thank its learners, teachers and the Alberton community, for dropping off loads of bottle tops. We commend their support on this ongoing welfare drive.”

Marihet Infantino, general manager at Amcare, extended her appreciation. “This is a fantastic initiative and we are grateful for the wheelchair, it will be given to our identified beneficiary. People cannot afford a wheelchair hence I think it makes a huge difference that somebody is able to just give it to them,” she said.
