Ekurhuleni faced steep challenges in 2013

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality faced a challenging year in 2013; one of the lows of the year was the power outages in the metro.

EKURHULENI –  Alberton residents will not forget the year 2013 easily, unfortunately not because of the highs during the year, but the inconvenience caused by the City of Ekurhuleni.

In February, Alberton residents were left in the dark for at least seven days before power was restored in the affected areas. Residents were told, “Power outages were caused by transmitters which blew after a lightning strike in January.”

Alberton was not the only area which had problems with electricity; Palm Ridge, Kempton Park and Edenvale were among other areas with similar challenges.

Palm Ridge residents were promised a new substation to be built to address the constant power outages in their area.

After a number of emails and questions asked at council meetings, the City of Ekurhuleni has not fixed the bridge over Swartkoppies Road. According to Ward 38 councillor, Estelle Visser, “The metro promised to rebuild the bridge earlier in the year.”

Despite the challenges faced in 2013, the city can still take pride in the Aerotropolis project which was launched earlier this year and the first Job Summit held in Alberton.

The Job Summit also raised questions about Ekurhuleni’s unemployment rate where entrepreneurship was identified as a potential solution to the challenge faced by the metro.
