Romano Mitchel requests new legal aid

Due to a conflict of interest the legal council of Romano Mitchel has withdrawn himself from the case.

ROMANO Mitchel, who stands accused of the murder of Stephan Jacobs, appeared in Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on July 22.

Despite the trial being set to start on the day, the case has been postponed to August 7 due to Mitchel requesting to switch his legal aid.

The defense attorney addressed the court saying that he met twice with the accused, but due to a conflict of interests between him and his client, he requests leave to withdraw himself from the case.

According to him, the accused indicated on the morning of his appearance on July 22, to his council that he was unhappy with the way they explained what is to happen to him.

He indicated that there were discontent and lack of trust from his client.

The magistrate enquired from Mitchell what he plans to do to get representation. To this Mitchel requested a couple of weeks to get the money together for a private attorney.

The magistrate also asked whether he would be willing to still work with legal aid if they provide different representation.

The magistrate warned the accused that this is the last time he would get a postponement based on the need for legal representation as he is wasting the time of the witnesses and state and wasting state resources.

The trial will continue on August 7 in the Regional Court of Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court.
