Six drivers were arrested on October 5 and four drivers on October 6.

EMPD cracked down on speedsters with two operations in the Alberton area over the weekend of October 5 and 6.

In total, 10 drivers were arrested for driving far above the speed limits of the roads in question.

The first operation took place on Heidelberg Road between the N3 and Dekanah Road on October 5.

The limit for this stretch of road is 70km/h.

There, six drivers were arrested during the operation. A 49-year-old man, driving a silver Mini Cooper, was arrested for speeding at 136km/h.

He claimed that he was rushing to the nearest shopping mall.

Another excessive speeder was arrested for driving at 123km/h in his Renault Clio, claiming that he was rushing to the bank. The remaining drivers were arrested after clocking speeds above 108km/h, giving reasons ranging from rushing to the cemetery to rushing home.

The second operation took place on the N12 freeway east between Reading interchange and the Voortrekker Road off-ramp.

A 28-year-old driver was arrested for clocking 171km/h in his white GWM SUV.

He claimed he was driving that fast because he was late for work.

The second highest speed was registered by a 22-year-old man, in a red VW Polo, who mentioned that he had no reason to speed when he clocked 168km/h.

A man in his 30s, with a female passenger, in a grey VW Golf, was caught speeding at 167km/h, reportedly rushing to a funeral.

A 21-year-old female driver, of a white Suzuki sedan, was caught at 161km/h, claiming that she was rushing home.

All 10 drivers were charged with reckless and negligent driving at Alberton SAPS.
