On November 7, two members of the Germiston Flying Squad Unit patrolling on the N12, near the Voortrekker Road offramp, noticed a suspicious grey Toyota Hilux standing with its doors open and four suspects standing around it. Sgt Hosea Nkabinde and Sgt Shashapa Mokoena approached the vehicle. Nkabinde spoke to one of the suspects who introduced himself as the driver, and, as the officer passed him, the other three suspects ran away from the police. The driver was unable to evade the officers and was arrested by Mokoena. When the police searched the vehicle and the suspect, they recovered three unlicensed firearms and unlicensed ammunition. The first firearm was found on top of the left front tyre and the other two inside the vehicle. The officers were further able to determine that the vehicle used by the suspects was fitted with incorrect number plates.

The suspect was taken to Alberton SAPS and a case of unlawful possession of a firearm and illegal possession of ammunition was registered. The Germiston Flying Squad Unit acting commander commended the officers for the arrest and gave a stern warning to criminals that the police will have a zero-tolerance approach this festive season in the fight against crime and ensuring the safety of South African citizens.
