Alberton High student tops Ekurhuleni class of 2013

Top 230 matric stars share over R5 Million of Mayoral Bursaries at the mayoral Academic Excellence Awards.

KEMPTON PARK – Lisa Nunes, an Alberton High School learner was named the top student in Ekurhuleni when Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni Cllr Mondli Gungubele awarded 230 top matric students with bursaries to the value of R5.7 million.

Speaking to the students, the mayor said bursaries were an investment into the lifetime future of Council.

“We are not doing you a favour by awarding you bursaries, we are doing ourselves a favour because we believe that education is a lifetime investment that can only serve to grow our city and country,” he said.

One of the bursary recipients currently registered with the University of Johannesburg to pursue a medical field known as Homeopath expressed her gratitude to the mayor.

“The bursary has assisted me a great deal because my family could not afford to pay for my university fees. I have always dreamed of becoming a doctor and it always seemed impossible because of my financial background but I am really happy that it is finally happening.

“I am happy to be the resident of Ekurhuleni and words cannot describe my joy at what the municipality has done for me. I am living my dream,” she said.
