Two speedsters arrested in Brackendowns and five in Primrose

The seven arrested drivers are facing charges of reckless and negligent driving and are expected to appear in their area’s respective magistrate’s courts.

Over the weekend of January 25 and 26, the EMPD Speed Law Enforcement Unit arrested seven drivers in the Alberton and Primrose areas.

On January 25 between 5am and 8am the unit was in the Brackendowns area on Kliprivier Road between Vaal and Andries roads. Two drivers were arrested for excessively exceeding the speed limit in the 80km/h zone. A white Toyota Quantum minibus taxi, carrying 13 passengers, was stopped after being clocked at 123km/h. The 29-year-old driver tried to justify his speeding by saying it is rush hour. A second driver, a 37-year-old male in a Volkswagen Polo, was nabbed doing 117km/h claiming that he was late for work.

On January 16 the unit was staged on AG De Wet Road in Primrose between Main and Northreef roads. Five drivers were arrested during the operation. Two drivers were arrested for exceeding 100km/h in the 60km/h zone. The first driver, a 19-year-old male in a BMW sedan, was clocked at 105km/h saying that he was rushing due to being late for church. Another driver was arrested for driving at a 102km/h. The 23-year-old driver of a Volkswagen Golf claimed that he was rushing home. The remaining three drivers were all arrested with registered speeds of 98km/h.
