Makhura appointed as Gauteng Premier

David Makhura was named Gauteng premier after the ANC announced its premier candidates on Tuesday May 20.

JOHANNESBURG – Deputy Secretary of the African National Congress (ANC) Jesse Duarte announced ANC’s Provincial Secretary David Makhura as Gauteng’s premier.

During the press briefing Duarte said, “While NEC agrees provinces can nominate anyone, we do strongly want gender parity, may have to change policies on this.

“If the Premier is a man, then 60 percent of Members of the Executive Committee (MEC’s) must be female.”

The ANC remains committed to addressing the issue of unemployment in the province, building an economy not based on racial discrimination, building houses and health.

Former Ekurhuleni Mayor Ntombi Mekgwe was announced as the speaker. Earlier today, Mekgwe was expected to replace outgoing premier, Nomvula Mkonyane.
