Draining Problem: Drain leaves Verwoerd Park family blocked up

The entire family has been getting sick because of the blockage, even a number of visits to council failed to produce fruit.

VERWOERD PARK – Monica Martheze from Van Zyl Avenue of Verwoerd Park has experienced blocked drains on many occasions during June and July.

She contacted plumbers who came to her assistance, one of which was from a private plumber who attended to the matter three times and the other from her insurance company who came out once.

She could not keep up to date with the number of times the drains had blocked as it happened frequently.

The private company informed her that it is not a plumbing issue and that she may need to replace all the pipes. The pipes were replaced on August 6, but the drains kept blocking.

She logged a complaint with Ekurhuleni on July 21 and received reference number 113 0982. Ekurhuleni informed her that they would come within 24 hours but never did.

After that, she called every day and received the same response from the call centre, saying that someone will be sent but still no one had come.

Monica went to the sewage department at Swartkoppies Road on August 4 and received another reference number 114 5669. She was ensured by an EMM representative that they would attend to the matter. On August 7 no one came out.

“This is a health risk and my family has been getting sick,” said Monica.

Ekurhuleni responded by saying that the complaint was incorrectly captured on the system and thus did not reach the depot responsible. The complaint was investigated and cleared on August 12. The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality apologises for this mishap.

On August 14 Monica said that her brother found an Ekurhuleni representative at the Alberton Dam on that day and asked them to come and resolve the matter. They came to her property and opened the drains but when requested to sanitise it, said that it needs to be reported first.
