Hijacker shot and arrested

A normal patrol lead to an arrest after Alberton SAPS investigated gunshots heard in the distance on November 20.

ALBERTON – An Alberton sector vehicle and the flying squad were on a routine patrol in Roodekop Extension 31. The police heard gunshots in the distance and this led them to the traffic light next to Huntersfield Stadium in Katlehong.

Their proactive investigation paid off, as four suspects in a Honda Ballade were trying to hijack a vehicle.

The suspects noticed the police and sped off.

The Honda Ballade with four suspects drove into Roodekop, where three suspects jumped out of the car and ran in different directions. The vehicle with only the driver inside drove away.

One of the suspects started shooting at the police vehicle and hit the left mirror. The police returned fire and hit the suspect, in his leg and buttock. The 26-year-old suspect has been arrested and is under police guard in hospital.

The police has recovered a firearm used in the shootout with 11 rounds and opened a case of attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
