EMPD imposter caught

Brackendowns SAPS arrested a man on January 23 for impersonating an Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police officer.

BRACKENDOWNS – The suspect was discovered after an EMPD officer was approached while monitoring funeral processions at Kromvlei cemetery. The man was found to be wearing a reflective jacket; an EMPD cap and fraudulent EMPD stickers on his car.

The suspect claimed the branded items were purchased in Robertsham, Johannesburg. He also claimed that he received approval from EMPD to assist in funeral proceedings, with point-duty at intersections. He produced an alleged certificate of competency and was found in possession of a licenced firearm with 13 live rounds.

The suspect was charged with impersonating a metro police officer at the Brackendowns police station. He appeared before the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on January 26.

Investigations of possible additional fraud charges are being investigated by the police as the verification process will be necessary to check the authenticity of the signatures on the confiscated certificates.
