Initially repairs were estimated to take three to four weeks according to an engineer on site. The reality has been different as five weeks on the sinkhole looks no closer to being repaired.
According to EMM spokesperson Themba Gadebe, the repair works have taken longer than anticipated due to poor soil conditions. The existing Rand Water line had to be protected before excavations started, but the soil was too weak for the line.
A contractor has been appointed by Rand Water to start the repair works.
