Mercury thieves nabbed by SAPS

Brackendowns SAPS patrolling in Alrode noticed a suspicious white golf transporting five men.

ALBERTON – They stopped and searched the car and came across a cache of mercury liquid to the value of R60 000. Mercury is sometimes used in mines to clean gold.

The SAPS officers asked the suspects where they had obtained the mercury, but they could provide no answers. Through further investigation the officers found that all five suspects are employed at the same mine in the North West province.

The suspects will appear at Palm Ridge Court on Thursday, March 26.
