Fast, furious drivers arrested

Sunday morning April 19 a 21-year-old soccer player from a premier league club was arrested after driving at 196 km/h on the N12 freeway between the R59 and Voortrekker turnoffs.

The soccer player refused to stop. He was part of a high speed pursuit involving three EMPD motorbikes and a BMW. The pursuit culminated with the speedster being cornered at the Edenvale exit on the R21 Eastbound. The arrest took place at 07:00 on Sunday morning. He was in a black VW Polo GTI and claimed that he was rushing to the club camp.

Four more speedsters were also arrested between 07:00 and 08:30 on the N12 at the Voortrekker turnoff – caught doing speeds of between 186 and 163km/h.

Reasons advanced by those arrested varied from late for work to taking a sick child to hospital.

All the five people arrested were charged with reckless and negligent driving at the Alberton police station, and are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon.
