Late last year, the road was highlighted as a hive of criminal activity, with the CPF asking motorists to be aware and observant. An initiative, launched in January, between private security companies, local police and EMPD to proactively combat crime in the area seems to have had little effect on crime-related incidents in the vicinity.

Brackendowns spokesperson Sgt Lindi Moloi said that the SAPS are aware of the problems around Old Vereeniging, Potgieter, the R59 and Swartkoppies roads. According to the police sergeant, these areas are hot spots for smash-and-grabs and common robberies.

“We want to warn the community and make them aware, especially  when approaching the areas mentioned. Be well prepared and hide all important belongings.” Sgt Moloi said.
