Alrode: Smash and grabs on the increase

An attempted smash and grab victim saw how the perpetrators attempted to pounce on other motorists at an intersection in Alrode.

MOTORISTS need to be more vigilant as smash and grabbers are on the prowl in Alrode.

Tyrone van der Merwe, CPS Security spokesperson, said their control room received a call from a client at 14:30 on August 13, explaining that he was involved in an attempted smash and grab incident on the corner of Potgieter Street and Old Vereeniging Road.

He said the client made a U-turn after the perpetrators attempted to smash his window. He watched the perpetrators from a distance as they attempted to pounce on another motorist driving a blue Toyota Yaris.

The tactical unit reportedly gave chase and together with the help of the Brackendowns Police Station, they managed to apprehend one of the five suspected smash and grabbers.

“The one suspect caught is allegedly the same man who had smashed the window of the Toyota Yaris. We also noticed that the suspect had gold chains wrapped around his wrist which we believe were taken from motorists earlier that day.”

According to Van der Merwe, while waiting for the suspect to be transported to the Brackendowns Police Station, four more motorists stopped at the scene and said that they too were involved in smash and grab incidents over the last few weeks.

“We would like to take this opportunity to inform all motorists to please be vigilant when stopping at intersections and to place any valuables out of sight.”
