Raw sewage leak due to theft

Municipality says that it is a constant problem as thieves steal the covers.

IN September Clr Bruna Haipel of Ward 37 took the RECORD to a raw sewage leak close to Pear Park on the corner of Marthinus Oosthuizen Avenue and Hendrik Potgieter Street in Alberton North. Sewage had reportedly been flowing into the Natalspruit and it was believed that scrap metal thieves were to blame.

Themba Gadebe, municipal spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Metro, said the access covers on the pipes above the stream crossing have been stolen several times before.

“Raw sewage will only overflow into the stream if there is a blockage downstream of the crossing,” Gadebe said.

The municipality found that there was no overflow nor any leak when they inspected the site recently.
