Swartkoppies Bridge now open

The pedestrian bridge in Brackenhurst is now open for residents in the area to use.

BRACKENHURST – After approximately six years, pedestrians in Brackenhurst can once again cross Swartkoppies Road safely after the bridge was reopened following repairs.

According Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM), a part of the 190 metre-long bridge was knocked off by a truck load exceeding the height limit.

The EMM conducted repairs to the crossing which involved the installation of a steel-reinforced structural concrete deck and steel hand railing.

Although legal steps were taken against the company responsible for the accident, the Metro urges drivers to be wary of and comply with the rules of the roads they utilise.

“It is important for vehicles to obey the load and height restrictions on our roads to prevent any injuries to pedestrians and motorists as well as damage to property,” said Member of Mayoral Committee for Roads and Transport, Petrus Mhlari.

Mhlari also appeals to residents to assist in safeguarding the municipality’s infrastructure by reporting any pedestrian bridges that may have been tampered with or have missing railings, or are damaged in any way, to the call center on 086 054 3000.

The news of the bridge being ready for pedestrians was welcomed by Ward 38 councillor, Clr Estelle Visser who was delighted that the bridge is now ready for the residents of Brackenhurst to use.

In expressing her delight, Clr Visser said, “I am relieved and grateful that after five years my endless efforts to restore the Swartkoppies Bridge have paid off and it is open now.

“For the safety of Ward 38 residents, especially our valuable children it is a milestone; a word of thanks to officials who assisted to finalise the project.”
