Eighteen suspects were arrested during a special operation conducted by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) as part of the Chief of Police, Bafana Andries Mahlabe’s, Bumper to Bumper crime fighting strategy.
EMPD Public Order Policing Unit members started on Tuesday night, November 10, to arrest wanted criminals, suspects who skipped bail as well as those who failed to make an appearance in court. The operation only ended at 08:00 on Wednesday, November 11.
Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said the suspects were tracked down to their bedrooms and hiding places.
During this operation three were nabbed for assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm, with cases that were registered at Kwa-Thema, Olifantsfontein and Edenpark Police Stations.
Two female suspects were rounded up in connection with police cases registered at the Katlehong Police Station.
Five more suspects were arrested for common assault with cases registered at Tsakane, Katlehong, Tembisa and Olifantsfontein Police Stations.
Another eight suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from assault, robbery, theft, crimen injuria, theft of a motor vehicle, interfering with official police duties, being in possession of stolen property and failure to produce proof of identification.
Kgasago said the Bumper to Bumper strategy is implemented to give police an omnipresence which puts pressure on criminals not to freely engage in criminal activities.
“Criminals are made to constantly look over their shoulders as the metro police will be breathing down their necks,” Kgasago said.
