Watering your garden could cost you R12 000
The Ekurhuleni metro has issued a warning to residents who do not adhere to water restrictions.
EKURHULENI – In the light of persisting heat wave sweeping through Gauteng and the delayed seasonal rains, which has caused acute water supply interruption in parts Ekurhuleni, the City of Ekurhuleni calls on all residents and businesses to strictly adhere to restrictions put in place. Failure to adhere to restrictions will result in penalties.
The following restrictions have been put in place:
- No filling of swimming pools;
- No irrigation of gardens with hosepipes and/or sprinklers at all times
According to Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Water and Energy, Clr Doctor Xhakaza, the above measures are classified as unauthorised until the restrictions are lifted. Penalties for non-compliance will be levied as promulgated by Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.
Should consumers be in contravention of these restrictions by watering their gardens or washing their vehicles with hosepipes, a fine of up to R6196 will be issued to the households while business consumers will be fined a fee of R12 626 as well as related administration costs.
“In reducing your consumption, you will be contributing to our efforts to keep the amount of water in our reservoirs at acceptable levels, thus ensuring a consistent supply,” said MMC Clr Xhakaza.

Ekurhuleni Member of Mayoral Committee for Water and Energy, Cllr Doctor Xhakaza spent his Saturday, November 14 in Germiston and the surroundings assessing the levels of critical reservoirs as well as interacting with the communities affected by the water supply interruptions. He took some time listening to their challenges. Key amongst the challenges raised included security around JOJO tankers and for people who could only fetch water in the evenings. The MMC has emphasised his call to all residents to use water sparingly. In the attached pictures, the MMC is seen helping residents by carrying their water into their block of flats.
In addition to the restrictions, residents are still encouraged to refrain from the following:
- No water washing of pavements and cars with hosepipes;
- Reduce showering time;
- Repair all water pipe leaks, including toilet leaking cisterns;
- Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily; and
- Report burst pipes immediately to 0860 54 3000.
