Jennifer van Tonder attacker sentenced

Edwin Mbatha, was sentenced to eight years in prison after being convicted of attempting to murder Jennifer van Tonder.

FINAL resolution was reached for Jennifer van Tonder, when the man convicted of attempting to burn her alive in her car was sentenced on Friday, December 4.

On Thursday, October 22, Edwin Mbatha was convicted of attempting to murder van Tonder at her home in South Crest.

Mbatha had recently been dismissed from his post as a gardener when, on Thursday, July 24, he poured petrol on van Tonder’s vehicle early in the morning and set it alight.

The court case was delayed several times over the 17-month period in which it was heard in the Palmridge Magistrates Court. The sentence handed down by the court was for eight years imprisonment, of which 17 months were already served during the court proceedings.

After the sentencing, van Tonder stated: “At least we will be safe for a while.”
