We say goodbye to a great man

Peet van Niekerk, the RECORD's sport reporter has reached this milestone in his life and he will be retiring at the end of the year.

SOMETIMES, and not too often one may add, you meet people who make a lasting impression in your life, and in the lives of others around you.

For just four months short of 32 years he has served the Alberton sporting community but, unfortunately, life carries on and one gets to a stage where retirement is upon you.

Peet van Niekerk, the RECORD’s sport reporter has reached this milestone in his life and he will be retiring at the end of the year.

Peet, it is not often that we don’t find the correct words to say goodbye or to describe the impact some people have in our lives and in the lives of others – and today, I am at a loss of words.

I can truly say that Peet has lived for each and every sporting event in our town. He carried out your duties as a sport reporter with passion and that alone will leave a gap in our community. The many awards bestowed upon him over the years, and especially during these last couple of months when news about his retirement became common knowledge, are proof that Peet is leaving deep foot prints behind.

And yes, you guessed it, Peet is one of those rare people who only come around once in a while to make a huge difference in the lives of many and he will most certainly be missed – not only by his colleagues at the RECORD, but definitely in Alberton’s world of sport.

Peet, I will always hold your integrity, your passion and your dedication in high regard. You are leaving a void in Alberton, one of many years of knowledge, one with your friends and colleagues and most certainly one in our local sport clubs.

Thank you for being the person you are, not only as a colleague but also as a friend. Thank you for your service to our sporting community, and thank you for the many times you stepped out of that zone into the zone of general reporting for our community. You can rightfully look back on a career with a satisfied smile and truly say: “I did it all, I did it my way and I did it the right way.”

Although this is a sad goodbye, we wish you the best with your retirement and may you enjoy many happy years in the fair Cape.

God bless.
