OVER the last two months two women who live alone in the South of Joburg have been attacked in their homes.

Most recently an 87-year-old woman was beaten up in her Mondeor home on Monday, January 25.

The intruder, a male who was wearing a balaclava, got into her home at about 08:00 threatening to hurt her unless she handed over cash.

He then pushed her to the floor and poured hot water from the kettle over her, tried to strangle her and tied her arms together.

This is the second time the woman has been attacked in her home this year – only three weeks prior to this attack, on January 3, she was also attacked and robbed. The robber managed to get away with a few items and took some food. Mondeor SAPS have opened a case and are investigating.

Another woman (63) was attacked in her home on December 23 last year. “It was 06:00 and I let the dogs go outside and stupidly left the security door open. The dogs began to bark and I went to look why. I couldn’t see anything but felt uneasy so I phoned Guardian Security. The next thing I saw a man with a blue mask over his face climbing up the outside decking stairs. I ran inside but I couldn’t close the door in time so I screamed as loud as I could. He ran after me, pushed me to the floor and tried to strangle me. There was no way I was giving up without a fight and I even kicked him in the crotch while he was on top of me. I managed to get out from underneath him and pushed the panic button. He ran out of the house and jumped the wall into the veld.

“The security company arrived very quickly as well as the police. I saw the man had climbed up a tree and pointed him out to the security and police but he jumped from the tree into another garden and managed to escape. It was a terrifying experience and I’m still quite traumatised,” said the woman.

Women who live alone are advised by Mondeor SAPS to be very aware and not to leave doors or security doors open or unlocked.
