Alberton resident turns 90

A RESIDENT of Alberton for the last 15 years will celebrate 90 years of life on April 1.

Christoffel Corneles Nel was born in Pietermaritzburg, Natal, in 1926, and has lived in Alberton since 2001. “I’m very happy here”, he says about his new home.

Mr. Nel worked for Telkom for 49 years and only ever took one day off from work. “I’ve always stayed fit and active and played sport from a young age. A healthy lifestyle is very important to me”, he says.

When asked what the secret is to his longevity, Nel replies: “Keep busy. I am the chairman of the body corporate of our complex, I do a crossword everyday, play piano, read. God is good”

Nel lives by a mantra which may also be a contributing factor to his long life and why he still has a healthy blood pressure of 120/80: “I refuse to lose my temper, nothing will upset me, I will be calm, I will overcome all obstacles.”
