Alberton escapes Easter road fatalities

Alberton reported no fatal collisions on its roads this Easter weekend.

EKURHULENI Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Wilfred M. Kgasago was gratified to announce that no fatal traffic collisions happened in Alberton over the long weekend.

Transport Minister Dipuo Peters released the national death toll results in Pretoria on Tuesday, March 29.

The report entails figures from March 24-28. “The report indicates there were 156 fatalities this year compared to 287 fatalities for the same period last year. This represents a much welcome 46% decline,” said Peters.

Five drivers were arrested on Thursday, March 24 for speeding on Kliprivier Road between Andries and Vaal roads.

The drivers were charged with reckless and negligent driving at Brackendowns police station. All the drivers were released after posting bail of R1 000 each. They appeared in Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, March 29.
