Reading Golf Club restored to former glory

After nearly a year of disruption at the club in New Redruth, golfers could finally celebrate the completion of the work and the re-opening of their signature ninth hole on Saturday, April 30.

MAINTENANCE work at Reading Golf Club in Alberton has been completed.

After nearly a year of disruption at the club in New Redruth, due to a Rand Water pipeline project running through a section of the course, golfers could finally celebrate the completion of the work and the re-opening of their signature ninth hole on Saturday, April 30.

Parts of Alberton, from Meyersdal through to New Redruth, have been the scene of a Rand Water Board project for a new pipeline since May 2014, costing an estimated R1.3 billion.

In May last year, the contractors started laying the new water pipeline through the golf course. The then par four ninth hole (par five for the ladies) was transformed to a par three for the duration of the pipeline work.

According to David Smith, general manager at Reading Country Club, all the areas of the course affected have now completely been reinstated by the contractors and Rand Water Board.

The ninth hole has been restored back to a par four for both ladies and men and the green was rebuilt by Golf Data. “The green is 25 per cent bigger than the old one and other features now include three bunkers protecting the green,” says David.

Members were unanimous in their approval of the new green and celebrated in style. After completing their rounds and having photographs taken, a dinner was served, some dancing took place and a R5 000 draw was up for grabs.

“We wish to thank all golfers and our committees, as well as our greens-keeper, Sean Byrne, for their patience, commitment and hard work to get our course back to its former glory,” added David.
