UNRELENTING EMPD Bumper to Bumper operations efforts to nail offenders are fully under way as evidenced by the arrest of five drivers on Friday night.
The speed enforcement took place between 17:00 and midnight on Friday, May 6, on the R556 between Andries Street and Vaal Road, which is an 80km/h zone in the Alberton area.
The speedster who clocked the highest speed of 122km/h was a 35-year-old male driver stopped at 18:27, in a grey Mercedes-Benz sedan, who claimed that he was rushing home to an expectant wife.
Travelling at 120km/h behind a wheel of a red Peugeot, the driver who was caught around 18:15, blamed his speeding on his strong urge to get home to his family after a hard day’s work at the office.
At 19:40, the metro police arrested a 23-year-old male in a white Jeep Cherokee, who clocked in at 118km/h, advancing the reason that he was late to pick up his girlfriend.
Nabbed at 19:55 in a white Isuzu double cab, a man caught travelling at 117km/h stated that he and his girlfriend wanted to get home to relax, prompting him to step on the gas.
Saying that he was concerned about his children being on their own where he had to collect them, a 38-year-old male driver in a white Toyota sedan was arrested when speeding at 115km/h.
The five arrested drivers were charged at Brackendowns police station with reckless and negligent driving and appeared at the Palmridge Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 9 May.
They were all granted bail of R1 000 each.
