THE ALBERTON CPF has noticed an increase in the theft of dustbins over the past month, particularly in the General Alberts Park area.
On Wednesday, July 13, at approximately 19:20, a suspect was seen wheeling a bin along Boekenhout Street, at the corner of Bloekom Street.
A CPF patroller immediately gave chase and managed to stop the suspect in his tracks. Alberton SAPS was contacted and the man was handed over to them.
According to the CPF, many residents may think it is silly to apprehend a suspect over a refuse bin, as the average price of a wheelie bin is approximately R700.
It is, however, not just about the cost of replacing the bin; thieves use these bins to conceal stolen items, as no one will realise that valuable items may be hidden in them.
“The refuse bins are also used to assist would-be thieves to climb over walls, to enter properties. It is, for this reason, imperative that residents inform either the Alberton CPF, the Alberton SAPS or their local security companies when they see suspicious-looking characters walking down the street with refuse dustbins,” said Derek Gouws, deputy chairman of Alberton CPF.
Residents are also urged to ensure that their bins are stored on their premises at night, even if they arrive home and find that the bins have not been emptied yet.
The Alberton CPF would like to thank patroller Riaan van Zyl for his vigilance in apprehending the suspect and the Alberton SAPS for their swift response.
