FRIDAY, June 9 was another exciting day for the toddlers of Kids’ Paradise Preschool. Alberton’s Community Emergency Response Team paid them a visit and taught them all about fire safety.
Sitting with their legs neatly folded, they waited excitedly for the appearance of the ‘firepeople’. Three friendly people showed up – Tefo Qothelo, Mpho Senyatsi and Jabulile Nkosi. Everyone made them feel welcome with a big, bountiful “hello”.
They started by putting out a big green mat with the words “stop”, “drop” and “roll” printed on it in yellow. After explaining how to extinguish oneself after catching on fire, the team invited some willing little participants to demonstrate on the mat. At first they were shy and some even cried, but after seeing their friends stopping, dropping and rolling, they were queueing to get a turn.
For their courage, the kids were each rewarded with a fire safety colouring book. It’s safe to assume that they won’t forget what to do when they encounter fire danger.
To top off the morning, everyone posed for a picture with the Community Emergency Response Team at their van. And of course, the team got a hundred hugs each from the little ones. It was a wonderful morning for everyone.
