THEUNIS DE BRUIN: This will be very bad for property values in the surrounding areas and in my opinion it will also add to crime statistic in the area.
RESIDENTS from Alberton and workers who travel here from surrounding areas have their say on low-cost housing planned for Alberton.
THERESA DE AGRELLA: The low-cost housing will be devastating for Alberton because the crime rate will rise by 100 per cent.
A development planner has applied to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality to subdivide and rezone the land situated on the corners of Swartkoppies and Lincoln Roads, opposite the Lemon Tree shopping centre to low-cost housing.
LINDA XHALA (not a resident): I don’t see a problem. The government is trying to uplift people and give them houses.SAMANTHA BOOYSEN: One major concern is the negative impact it will have on the property market/prices in the area. Property prices will drop like crazy. Residents’ rates taxes and utilities will also skyrocket because they will have to pay for the new “residents.” Say goodbye to the neighbourhood.KERSHIA MARTIN (not a resident): I think it’s a good thing. There’s not enough living space.SIMPHIWE MBATHA (not a resident): It’s good. People in the location need houses.BOITUMELO RARANE (not a resident): To put people there will prevent crime because nobody will get robbed so it’s a good thing.DI SIMPSON-ROCKHILL: As much as I feel for the people that need the housing our infrastructure can’t handle it. If the municipality upgrades services maybe then it can be looked at.
