Young man still waiting to be assisted after being shot

"The police also said that I can't open a case because I was not involved because I was not one of the criminals or security officers"

A MAN, who suffered a gunshot wound to his leg, is still waiting for answers three years after the incident.

On July 31, 2014, Mlungisi Erick Mathe (now 30) was at the Telkom Direct store in Alberton City when a group of men robbed the store and a shoot-out occurred between the suspects and a security company.

According to Mathe, he was struck in the leg (upper thigh) by one of the shots fired from a Protea Coin security officer.

SCARRED FOR LIFE: Mathe’s leg bares the scar of that fateful day.

“The Alberton City management said they would help me out but when I called after the incident the manager who had guaranteed to help me had left and someone else had been hired in his place,” said Mathe.

“The police also said that I can’t open a case because I was not involved. I wasn’t one of the criminals or security officers,” added Mathe.

Mathe said that he is in constant pain and is unable to work due to the injury.

“The doctor can’t remove the bullet because it’s too dangerous and he is afraid to paralyse me if he attempts to take it out. He says it’s best to just leave it there,” Mathe explained.

RISKY BUSINESS: An x-ray of Mathe’s leg, where the bullet is still lodged.

“That shooting left me with a serious and permanent injury through no fault of my own and I never got any compensation, I just feel it’s the least they can do to help me since they are the cause of this and now I am struggling,” he adds.

RECORD contacted the Alberton Police Station, Alberton City management and Protea Coin weeks ago, but have still received no comment from any of them.
