EMPD security personnel at Alberton Civic Centre arrested an alleged fraudster for scamming desperate job seekers on April 1.
According to EMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, at around midday the EMPD officers spotted the well-dressed but suspicious-looking man conversing with two women in the Civic Centre parking lot.
The suspect was approached by plain-clothes EMPD CLU members who searched him and came across several official and personal documents of different people. He was also found in possession of more than R7 000 in cash.

The suspect admitted to working as an “unofficial consultant” collecting curriculum vitaes, bank statements and R2 000 from applicants who had applied for jobs online.
The two women the suspect was speaking to were such marks. They were promised secretarial positions at the Alberton Civic Centre and brought a total of R4 000 to pay the suspect.
“In-depth investigations are underway to get to the bottom of this scam. It is suspected that some person or persons who have access to the applicants’ information are working in cahoots with the suspect,” said Kgasago.

The 33-year-old suspect was charged with fraud and was expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on April 2.
