Allies not scared of the tough competition

Hoërskool Alberton suffered a 24-12 loss to Secunda, the team that knocked them out of the Beeld Trophy last year.

WHETHER on the winning or losing side, Allies have proved in their last couple of games that they have a fighting spirit which will not easily be broken.

Hoërskool Alberton suffered a 24-12 loss to Secunda, the team that knocked them out of the Beeld Trophy last year. However, it was a lot tighter than last year’s final where Secunda ran out 44-10 victors. The same two sides will contest the play-off for third and fourth place in the Super 16 series finals day on the fields of Hoërskool Dr Malan in Meyerton.

Alberton had previously accounted for Brits in their first match albeit with a performance that was far from polished.

Allies recently hosted Standerton in a thrilling encounter described by referee Richard Schultz as a great contest.

The hosts were ahead with 13-10 at the break and ended up winning 27-20.

The first noticeable aspect from both sides was the discipline. Although it was a tough game with no quarter asked or given, it was really a clean game.

Damien Holl had been moved from full back to his favourite fly half position and the backline immediately looked better for it. The forwards did their part too and the scrums and line-outs were much better than the previous week.

Allies’ strength this year is undoubtedly going to be their loose trio.

Captain Thomas Duvenage always leads the way and with Shaun Potgieter (number eight) and Sheldon Mickingly they have a truly dynamic combination. Mickingly is a special talent and his work rate, as well as that of Shaun Potgieter, is fantastic.

The backline looked to have much more penetration on the attack.

JP Groenewald scored twice and Mickingly and Potgieter also got onto the score sheet with Holl adding a penalty and two conversions.

u-16A: 24-5

Second team: 36-19

The next game they played was against Dr Malan in Meyerton and it was more of the same for the Alberton side as they ran away winners by 40-17 after leading 27-0 at the break.

Again Groenewald scored two great tries and Mickingly and Potgieter also scored.

JP Jacobs also got in on the action and Holl again slotted three penalties and four conversions.

The rest of the rugby teams did not fare as well as the previous week, with the hosts winning the rest of the games.
