On July 13, the Pink Pack Project invited Viyola van Wyk to speak to the children of Eden Park about the importance of focussing on their studies. She spoke to the learners and parents at Opelweg Primary School.
Viyola grew up in Eden Park where she was raised by a single mother. She completed both her primary and secondary school education in Eden Park and after matric went on to study a LLB law degree at the University of Pretoria. In 2018 Viyola obtained her LLB qualification and received the vice-chancellor’s award. This award is conferred to the LLB student with the highest weighted average over the time of the LLB degree.
Viyola highlighted the importance of focusing on your school studies to ensure that you can make a success. “Take initiative for your own future today,” said Viyola. Other important factors to success she highlighted included associating yourself with the correct people, being curious and reading to broaden your knowledge base.
The Pink Pack Project is a registered non-profit community organisation. The project empowers underprivileged menstruating girls with access to education through the supply of feminine hygiene products, life-skills mentoring and tutoring in science and mathematics. The project currently assist 40 girls from the townships of Eden Park, Johannesburg and Promosa, Potchefstroom in the North-West Province. On August 9 (Women’s Day) the project will be celebrating its second year of empowering underprivileged school-aged girls.
