
The Gauteng Department of Education outlined plans and measures to be taken for the return of learners to schools on June 1. On that day, only Grade seven and 12 learners will be returning to school and other grades at a later stage during the year.
Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi briefed the media on May 21 about its department’s readiness.
Protective Package Equipment (PPE) for schools phase one for senior management team (SMT): There will be one pack of surgical masks, one mask per person per day; temperature scanners, two per school; 25-litre hand sanitiser per school;germ-killing soap, 10 bars per school; 500ml hand sanitiser, 10 per school; biohazard bags, 20 per school, and one germ-killing soap bar per learner per week ordered for distribution after initial phase one and two.
Phase two for the remainder of staff and learners and teachers will get three-layer cloth masks, two per person; temperature scanners, six per school; 25lt hand sanitiser per school; liquid soap dispensers, two per school; 500ml hand sanitiser, one per staff member; 25lt germ-killing liquid soap, one per school; hand paper towel on a stand, two per school; biohazard bags, 30 per school; germ-killing soap,70 bars; face shields, 60 00 for deaf LSEN learners and teachers, 8 000 for nutrition and one per educator; heavy-duty gloves, five sets per school and cleaning wipes, two boxes per school.
Phase two for teachers, Grade 12 and seven learners will be rolled out and tailored to be ready for June 1.
Delivery is currently planned from May 25, based on stock availability. Principal and support staff for phase one they will get one antiseptic bar of soap, two three-layer masks that are supplemented with surgical masks, 500ml hand sanitiser, one 25lt hand sanitiser for refilling, two temperature scanners for schools, 10 biohazard bags for schools.
Learners will get antiseptic bars of soap per month, two three-layer masks that are supplemented with surgical masks and face shield for deaf learners. Teachers and other staff they will get two three-layer masks that are supplemented with surgical masks, 500ml hand sanitiser, face shield for teachers only, two sets of heavy-duty gloves and 16 sets of surgical gloves for teachers per school.
SchoolsThey will get one 25lt hand sanitiser, six temperature scanners, two germ-killing liquid soap, two paper hand towel rollers on the stand, two industrial-type cleaning wipes for the surface, two coveralls for LSEN teacher assistants, two sets of heavy-duty cloves for gas, 10 aprons per school for food handlers and 70 biohazard bags for schools.
Remember, online registration will open on June 25 and close on July 25.
