IEC officials removed from voting station

Independent Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) officials were removed from a station in Nigel after they stored voting material at a party agent’s house.

EAST RAND – After the first day of special voting, journalist Aldrin Sampear, (@AldrinSampear) tweeted that allegedly IEC ballot boxes as well as other material were confiscated by the SAPS from a house belonging to a guy called ‘Swazi’. According to the tweets, ‘Swazi’ is a ‘ANC Party Agent’.

However, another tweet from @LangaZulu read, “@uZamo_: See? RT @IECSouthAfrica: IEC voting material found at a house of a DA party agent in Ward 77”

The IEC did not mention which party was the agent representing, but confirmed that staff in Ward 77 contravened elections protocol by using the house of a party agent to store voting materials overnight between special voting days.

The IEC said, “Voting materials were recovered and escorted to the nearby police station where they are now being stored.”

South Africa’s fifth national and provincial elections will be held on 7 May as the IEC expects 25.39 million registered voters to cast their votes across 22 263 voting stations in the country.
