Meyersdal electricity leak stopped

When thinking of electricity theft it is easy to imagine that it only occurs in lower income areas; illicit connections made in the dark by faceless criminals, but this is not always the reality.

A Meyersdal landlord discovered that his tenant had been siphoning electricity from the city over an extended period of time.

While no illegal connections had been made on the property; the tenant managed to use electricity for over two years without payment being made to the City. On discovery of this transgression, the matter was reported to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. The power supply to the residence was cut off for a period of time, until the renter made an arrangement with the Finance Department to pay back the funds in arrears.

Themba Gadebe, spokesperson for the EMM, has advised home owners to take up credit control measures with the Finance Department and report bypassed meters to the Energy Department should they discover electricity tampering taking place on their property.
