Residents react to alteration of heritage site

Residents have taken to Facebook to voice their concerns about alteration of the Alberton City Hall

ALBERTON – A post on Facebook alleges that the Town Hall located in Alberton North will soon be the new home of offices.
According to the post, alterations have begun on the Alberton Town Hall to create a new space for offices. It has been confirmed that the work being done is illegal, according to Beverley-Ann Small, chairperson of the Alberton Historic Society.
The post further explains that there has been no consultation before the alterations started, and that none of the procedures have been followed.
The post was shared on the CPF Generaal Alberts Park Page and those tagged in the post was asked to share it.
Some of the residents have already voiced their outrage, and commented on the post to show their support to save this site.
The RECORD has sent an email to Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality (EMM) for official comment on the situation, and we will post an update as soon as we receive a comment from them.
The post, written in Afrikaans, reads as follows:
“In hierdie land maak almal soos hulle wil. Ek het pas verneem dat die ou stadsaal in Alberton (gebou in 1919 en in 1938, vergroot deur die bekende argitek Gerhard Moerdyk) – een van die bekendste historiese geboue in Alberton, verbreek word om vir kantore plek in te ruim. Daar was geen konsultasie van enige aard nie, en die regte prosedure is nie gevolg nie. Die gebou word natuurlik kragtens die Erfeniswet beskerm, maar wie steur hulle deesdae aan wette? Ek vra dat julle hierdie plasing sal deel met ander en, as julle self op die een of ander wyse ‘n bydrae kan lewer om die proses te help keer, julle dit sal doen. Dalk kan iemand help.”
