Burglaries on the increase

Since September 2014 burglary cases were on the decline until the beginning of March 2015, with a sudden increase in cases being reported.

Eden Park SAPS reports that they are being overwhelmed with new cases for housebreakings being opened almost daily.

“Many of the reported cases are opened by people who arrived home in the evening to discover that somebody broke into their homes during the day. This means that homes, with nobody home during the day, are being targeted,” said Captain Mhlophe of Eden Park SAPS.

He further said: “We as the police cannot provide security for every house in the area. We request that the people make arrangements with their neighbours to please keep an eye on their property while they are at work, or ask somebody to be at home during the day.”

It is commonly reported by many residents that almost all the burglaries are committed by Nayopi smokers who hang around on the corners. It is further alleged by many that the residents don’t want to be involved in any case as a witness.

“Remember, today it is your neighbour and tomorrow it is you,” said Captain Mhlophe.
