Lawyer on the wrong side of law arrested

An Alberton lawyer was arrested after he allegedly became aggressive and interfered with the metro police’s work.

ALBERTON – One would have thought a legal practitioner would have known the law better – but apparently not.

A lawyer, in his late thirties, made a brief appearance in the Palmridge Magistrate’s Court yesterday, November 2, for allegedly assaulting, resisting arrest and interfering with officers’ duties at the Alberton Police Station.

Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department’s spokesperson, said the EMPD Crime Prevention Task Team with the help of a private security company had stopped a suspicious Renault Clio in front of a building on Second Avenue.

“While busy searching the vehicle, a man approached the officers and told them to move away from his business,” Kgasago said.

“A squabble ensued when the officers requested the man to be patient as it would not take them much longer to finish with their work.”

The man was reportedly getting aggressive, allegedly spitting racial remarks and apparently also laid his hands on the officers who had no other choice but to arrest him.

Kgasago said it only later emerged that the man is a lawyer and that it is next to his premises where the officers were performing their lawful duties.
