AMCARE helps the elderly

A charity hosted for the underprivileged elderly.

JOVIAL singing was what greeted you as you entered the church at the AMCARE offices on Wednesday, December 2.

“Higher, higher!” you heard them sing. It was quite a sight to behold, a group of around 20 elderly people literally dancing for joy, celebrating Christmas brunch with the AMCARE employees.

Festivities started at 10:00 and carried on well into lunch-time, with the group of elderly folks from the Alberton squatter camp sitting down for a delicious meal at around 11:00, led in prayer by Percy Howroyd, general manager for AMCARE, who has been with the organisation for almost as long as it has been in existence.

Two SAPS members were also at the gathering, giving thanks for the valiant efforts of AMCARE to lend a helping hand. In the hall was a Christmas tree, decorated in a manner befitting a big family celebration, complete with gift packs filled with presents, food and a warm blanket for everyone.

Marihet Infantino, the social work manager, said that they have been busy with an outreach program for three months which serves the less fortunate elderly in the area, and have been organising visits, food parcels, and general support for several of these individuals who struggle to care for themselves, and in many cases have no family willing or able to help.

“There are many charity initiatives for the youth, underprivileged, mentally- and physically challenged, but not many for the underprivileged elderly”.
